Here are a few tips teachers use when deciding what books to read. You may find this useful to choose appropriate books to read aloud with your children. Following are examples of books for elementary students.
Tips for choosing appropriate read aloud:
- Choose a book that follows a theme of high interest to your child.
- Choose a book that allows your child lots of opportunities to interact with the characters.
- Choose a book from which you can generate comprehension questions about character traits, sequence of events, plot, problem and solution, etc.
- Choose books that are culturally diverse.
- Choose books that teach children a specific life lesson (example: do not steal or cheat)
